AB 341: Mandatory Commercial Recycling
Who: Businesses and public entities that generate four cubic yards or more of waste per week and multifamily housing of five or more units are required to recycle.
What: AB 341 provides authority for the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to implement a mandatory commercial recycling program statewide.
When: On October 6, 2011, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill (AB) 341 into law. This law became effective July 1, 2012.
Why: The purpose of this new state law is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste from landfills and expand opportunities for recycling in California.
How: Businesses and public entities that generate four cubic yards or more of waste per week and multifamily units of five or more are required to do one of the following:
1. Source separate recyclable materials from the solid waste they are discarding, and either self-haul or arrange for separate collection of the recyclables
2. Subscribe to a service that includes mixed waste processing that yields diversion results comparable to source separation
